Idag: Spanien
Maten på bordet är för dagen spansk. En gryta med morötter, selleri och lök som bas. På sedan med färsk timjan, spenat, pancetta eller stekt fläsk (knaperstek separat), rökt paprikapulver (jag hade inget så jag körde på rökt havssalt istället), samt kikärtor kokade med nejlikespäckad lök och vitlök. Kan du få tag på kastanjer, så smula dem över. Själv rev jag rikligt med Tomme de Chevre över.
Njut gärna med en ale från Mölndals egna fina microbryggeri Dugges (men du måste vallfärda till Mölndals system för att få tag på dem).

Taking Sides? (Dick pt III)
(a continuation of my Dawkins series)
Something I would like to point out, regarding the whole God vs science-debate, is that I'm not exactly taking sides in it. Rather; I think both sides are wrong. More precisely; I think both sides are taking their competence out of the context where it's useful. I have already made clear how Richard Dawkins falls short in my eyes. But equally so, it's a question that should be directed towards all "fundamentalists" (a word I use as commonly used, although I could go into detail about its origin and meanings).
For instance, if we study science in school; exactly where and when does it help us to change the curriculum so that we have a creationist version of science onboard? I posed the question to Richard Dawkins; why kill religion, when he is offering no substitute (see the post "Richard, Richard, Richard...")? Equally; how have creationists been able to help study and understand the human genome project, how have creationist perspectives had an impact on scientific cures for cancer, and so forth?
I think one key question here is competence. Are we changing x for y, even though y doesn't have the competence of x? Dawkins wants to make it look like religion is Windows XP and science is Windows 7, in other words: the replacement. Equally, creationists are sticking to their guns saying there's nothing wrong with "XP", and it needs no replacing. I think both these perspectives are mistaken. Also, when Dawkins wants to make it look like faith and science equals theism and atheism and must be at each others throat. Funnily enough, he doesn't care to let more moderates elaborate on how they see the connection. In his Darwin series, for instance, he cuts the archbishop of Canterbury short. Hardly a man you can ignore in an instance like this. He also completely ignores the fact that the Pope already in the 1960ies made the official statement to the world that there is no conflict between what the catholic church says and what Darwinism says. If I were to ask what christian person's opinion would be hard to ignore policies on belief and shaping or influencing faith all over the world. One good answer would definitely be the pope.
Dawkins' problem in this killing-religion-mission of his, is that he doesn't know very much about religion. Many important thinkers, especially political ones, have struggled over how politics and religion should coexist or what kind of religion is acceptable or compatible with politics etc. All too many times, however, the tendency has been to select a too narrow perspective on what religion is to be able to tacle the interesting and important question of religion and politics' position towards each other.
Equally, something that different parts of the church has done in all times, is to be too sceptical about the competence of sciences - both of nature, social sciences and humanities. There are innumerous examples, and it's just pointless to mention them as more people tend to know about them than about the holes in Dawkin's theories. And in that respect, they also help to fuel each other's fires: Early sociology for instance was dead certain that by the beginning of the 21st century, religion would lead marginal existence - a mere curiosity that most people didn't think much of. Not exactly what the global religious landscape looks like today. But surely, one of the reasons was probably that the church tried to rule out that any of the new sciences could actually have an impact or help better the world; a projection that can also easily be falsified.

Åkessons artikel är det bästa som hänt!
Tack Aftonbladet för att ni publicerade Jimmie Åkessons hatiska propaganda. Det verkar vara vad som behövdes för att Sveriges samlade partiledare och presskår skulle reagera på riktigt mot den tilltagande främlingsfientligheten. Det är hög tid att den adresseras, för när den väl gör det så faller argumenten platt.
Rasism?
Jag skrev för övrigt igår att "en röst på Sverigedemokraterna är en röst på ren och skär rasism". Det ska påpekas att rasism inte är rätt term, främlingsfientlighet rör det sig förstås om. Islam är inte en ras, inte en nation och inte en kultur. Tvärtom så består en stor del av exempelvis Sveriges Unga Muslimers (SUM) arbete i att skapa en "blågul" islam, befriad från kulturella sedvänjor som kan blandas samman med religionen, men som i själva verket är hämtade ur en nationell kontext.
Det är också just detta, att peka ut islam som monolitiskt hot, som gör Åkessons argument alldeles extra kvasi-intellektuellt och missvisande. En av böckerna jag tipsade om igår - Esposito&Volls Islam and Democracy är exempelvis ett jättebra exempel på hur principer ur islams källor och idétradition använts för att legitimera helt motsatta statskick, såväl totalitära styren som demokrati. Ibland sker legitimeringen med hänvisning till samma passager. I själva verket är nationalstaten en avgörande faktor för hur människor förstår och tolkar sin tro. På samma sätt kan vi vänta oss en förändring av islam i Sverige. En radikalisering finns dock inget stöd för, särskilt inte eftersom islamismen endast varit framgångsrik i de fall då den varit ett trovärdigt vardagspraktiskt alternativ till en korrupt och ickefungerande statsapparat.
Åkesson tolkar koranen
Jag vet inte om ni märkte det, men det är ganska roligt där på mitten av Åkessons debattartikel att han gör sig själv till koranuttolkare när han säger att islam inte har något nya testamente och inget allmänmänskligt kärleksbudskap. Att förstå och tolka religiösa texter är ingen lätt match. Och den som tänker sig att det endast finns ett möjligt sätt att tolka dessa texter på har inte sett sig omkring i världen. Exempelvis förstår katoliker och protestanter bibeln väldigt olika, och inom protestantismen ryms i sin tur en mängd olika samfund som uppkommit för att bibeln förstås olika. Ingen skulle godkänna ett sådant resonemang - "alla kristna förstår bibeln likadant", men det är lättare att komma undan med påståendet om muslimer, eftersom gemene man är lika inläst på olika grupperingar, tolkningar och samfund inom islam.
Det höjs ofta röster i Sverige när en enskild muslim lyfts fram på grund av "extrema" åsikter. Rösterna höjs oftast eftersom man inte vet hur många muslimer den enskilda personen egentligen representerar - tänk om han eller hon representerar alla!*
En annan, inte så oviktig detalj, är att han i och med det också i princip säger att judarna också saknar allmänmänskligt kärleksbudskap, om en med hjälp av en liten omväg. (Hur tänkte han: slå två minoriteter i en smäll?)
Nog om detta. Återigen, tack Aftonbladet, för att ni fick igång den här helt nödvändiga diskussionen.

Hur fel har Åkesson? Kolla in artikeln "Fel, fel, fel, Åkesson" som pekar på att 14 av 21 påståenden i Åkessons artikel saknar grund, proportioner eller på annat sätt är missvisande.
* Detta var någonting som jag tyckte var oerhört befriande med Halal-TV. De var på inget sätt representativa muslimer, för muslimer i Sverige är en otroligt hetrogen grupp, vilket omöjliggör att tre personer - vilka tre personer som helst - skulle aldrig kunna rymma den mångfald av idéer, kulturer och så vidare som ryms inom gruppen. Men istället för att "vaska fram medelmuslimen" så fick tre tjejer med tokroliga idéer (och ibland var de kanske bara tokiga och ibland bara roliga) varsin kamera och bra sändningstid.

Jimmie Åkessons "intellektuella" ordbajseri
Det behövs väl egentligen inte fler svar på Jimmie Åkessons förbluffande dumma, missinformerade och helt och hållet öppet rasistiska debattartikel om Islam som "det största hotet sedan andra världskriget". (Nu blir det onekligen svårt för dem som hävdat att "Sverigedemokraterna inte längre är ett rasistiskt - utan ett riktigt parti" att göra det med trovärdighet).
Jag skulle säga att det är just den här typen av intolerans; urskiljandet av en definitiv fiende som är den största typen av hot, särskilt för att dra paralleller till andra världskriget. Då pratades det om judefrågan, nu är det muslimfrågan.
Jag skulle här vilja tala om de oerhört tjusiga formuleringarna i början av artikeln. Förmodligen det som får allra minst uppmärksamhet. Men dessa är viktiga för att för dem som inte läst så mycket idehistoria exempelvis, kan det verka som om Jimmie Åkesson vet något. Han ordbajsar bara. Kolla här:
En av mångkulturens många inneboende paradoxer är att den, trots sitt universella anspråk, är ett monokulturellt fenomen som endast funnit grogrund i den postmoderna, oikofoba* västvärlden och som därför också tar sin utgångspunkt i västerländska fenomen och erfarenheter när man bedömer och analyserar omvärlden. Den västerländska erfarenheten ses som ett högre utvecklingsstadium, som resten av världen bara inte hunnit uppnå ännu.
Ok, here goes. För den som bekantat sig ens lite med postmodernism så är just Universella anspråk det som den ställer sig allra mest kritisk mot. Oikofoba västvärlden är ett påstående som endast kan backas upp av idéer som att man inte skäms för att öppna en pizzeria på landsbygden. Det finns ingen som helst empiriska bevis för att västvärlden skulle råda av någon som helst fobisk skam för de värden eller begrepp som "springer ur den egna myllan". Framför allt är oikofobi som begrepp ganska löjeväckande eftersom fobi handlar om en panisk rädsla och jag har i min dag visserligen träffat Stockholmare som inte är så intresserade av landsbygden, men förutom Carrie i Sex & The City's rädsla för ekorrar tror jag inte att jag stött på varken någon verklig eller fiktiv oikofob, i min dag.
Att använda västerländska fenomen och erfarenheter som utgångspunkt ställer sig Åkesson här kritisk till. Det finns nog få som låter så lokala och begränsade erfarenheter och fenomen till grund för hela sitt resonemang som Åkesson. Det finns ett problem behäftat med att den västerländska erfarenheten ses som ett högre stadium som resten av världen inte kommit ikapp. Men den typen av perspektiv vill ju Åkesson egentligen endast inskärpa och sanktionera.
Tänk om Åkesson bara spenderat lite mindre tid att hata muslimer och mer tid att faktiskt läsa på - vilket varje kunnig politiker bör göra - och informera sig om vilka inställningar som finns världen över i muslimska länder och i Europa, till exempelvis demokrati, mänskliga rättigheter, yttrandefrihet och så vidare. Längst ned följer lite boktips på området.
Extra ironiskt blir det att Åkesson gått till attack mot exempelvis Göran Hägglund för att inte vara tillräckligt folklig, samtidigt som han sätter tonen in sin debattartikel med hjälp av en kvasiintellektuell floskelbajsning.
En röst på Sverigedemokraterna är utan tvekan en röst på ren och skär rasism. Efter Åkessons artikel råder ingen som helst tvekan om den saken.

Kitchen, no nightmare
Just wanted to share some pictures my kitchen, which I absolutely love and adore.
Thoughts around my kitchen: Stainless steel (costum made), good surfaces to work on - easy to clean. There is a reason why they have these in basically every professional kitchen in the world. The sink is welded into the structure. Also, cooking with induction takes some getting used to. However, you can get a type of heat I've never experienced on a regular stove. Gas would've been good as well, but this is easier to keep clean, which is a bonus if you're no huge fan of cleaning.
Oven with a special bread and pizza function. - Yes, it's true, and fantastic!
And permanent knobs to the right to place hot trays and pans on.
One important feature when we designed the new kitchen was that is was not going to be too sterile. Sometimes, especially in catalogues, it can look like a mausoleum, daunting and you'd feel nervous to bring any sort of produce into it, and making a mess in this spotless designer living. That for me, would be a kitchen nightmare. Instead we leave pots, pans and utensils hanging. Slightly emulating an industrial kitchen, but most of all making it easy to grab something and just get in the game.
And on the bench is also a 5 kg bag of the very special flour Manitoba Cream. I've nearly used up two of them in two months. So you would think that you would've seen more pictures of bread by now.

"Religion och politik hör inte ihop"
Centerns ungdomsförbunds ordförande Magnus Andersson sa efter en ledamotsutfrågning att det är tydligt att Mahmoud Aldebe "inte förstått att religion och politik inte hör ihop". Här har vi någon som inte gjort sin hemläxa.
Den svenska forskaren Leif Stenberg kallar exempelvis den här synen, vilken ofta är förhärskande i Sverige, för en uppfattning sprungen ur en "svårutrotad etnocentricitet". Så det är det centern är förkortning för. =)
Jag har skrivit lite om vetenskapsfilosofi och Dawkins & Co tidigare. Jag skulle kunna skriva oerhört mycket mer om politik och religion och hur de hör ihop. Framför allt är det intressant med hela den debatt som blossat upp kring att Mahmoud Aldebe kandiderar i Stockholm för Centerpartiet. Men jag tänkte att jag skulle öppna upp för lite frågor, i den mån folk har sådana kring politik och religion, istället för att försöka hafsa ihop någon övergripande presentation av fältet. Men, det är ändå det fält jag i huvudsak sysselsatt mig med under mina teologstudier det senaste året. Och då framför allt kopplingen mellan islam och politik. Som sagt, fråga gärna, så kanske ni får ett svar som är lite mer påläst än det från Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, som skrev debattartikeln "Islamister hör inte hemma i Centern" i Expressen.

Evidence? (Dick pt II)
(This is a continuation of my Richard Dawkins and atheism vs theism-thread.)
Evidence. A fav word for Richard Dawkins. But what does it mean? What can it mean? According to the correspondance theory truth is something that can be said to exist in nature that can be "objectively observed", and ones statement about this thing can be checked against the original. This is more or less the version of truth Dawkins adheres to.
What he does not address however, is the question of: how can I investigate this object objectively and not merely subjectively? Is it possible for one person to investigate something without any preconception about what it is he or she is about to observe or investigate? The critique against the correspondance theory is that it's impossible to rid yourself of your preconceptions, prejudice and choices made along the way if you are to observe this object and understand anything of it.
When communicating back what you've seen, this too has to be done in a fashion where you put the observation into a language, a contextual framework to make your observations of this object - investigated with the help of your previous experience and concepts of language, nature, science, history and whatnot - graspable to anyone but yourself.
The idea of objectivity is seriously under critique and constant scrutiny. One of the early postmodern contributions to philosophy of science was to demonstrate how this objective state of all things somehow always ended up benefitting the same group of people; white middleaged men, funnily enough.
It's a good thing to want to rid yourself of preconceptions - ethnocentricity included - and try to overcome the obstacles they pose. It's quite another one to pretend that the preconceptions don't exist. This is what Dawkins does, and is also one of the points where he should be justifiably criticized.

PS. One of the tags for this post is "theology". Which may strike you as odd, as my text says nothing about God. What I'm writing about here is philosophy of science. That said, Dawkins is not being explicit about his philosophy of science, and it is partly therefor his entire thesis falls short.

Tro&Vetande
Nej, mitt intresse för Richard Dawkins ligger inte i att återuppväcka "Tro & Vetande"-debatten from lång ago. Mitt intresse ligger istället i att analysera vilket perspektiv och vilken kunskapssyn som ligger till grund för att en sån debatt ska vara "vettig"... På detta tema tänkte jag därför tipsa om en recension av Christer Sturmarks bok "Tro och Vetande 2.0".

Richard, Richard, Richard (stop being such a Dick)
I've browsed the web for some clips of Richard Dawkins after seeing his confused Darwin TV-series. What I've found - to little surprise - really is a formidable war between fundamentalist atheists and theists. This is much likely a topic I will expand on, or come back to now and then, so this is not a final addition to this debate. However, this is very much my point: there should be no final argument that settles this debate. Instead we ought to discuss the ingredients that makes such a debate reasonable or unreasonable. Suffice it to say, I find it to be the latter.
One of the highlights of my youtube-athlon of Dawkins and "counter-clips" was when he said that he is out to kill religion. This is quite interesting I think. It's kind of a white man's burden perspective on religion. We who art enlightened (Dawkins confused philosopher friend Daniel Dennet has labelled themselves "brights" as in enlightened, and "supers" goes for all the superstitious people) ought to save the... "supers".
I find it interesting why someone who is in a position where his life is not influenced more by religious statements or bodies, than by adversary political parties to the one he prefers himself.
As you may or may not know my theology studies is primarily focused on the connection between religion and politics. What I find is that they are both pretty similar in character in many respects. The starting point may vary, but both then go on to have immediate effect on the society in which they occur. Religion and politics emanate from a view on what the good life (and good way of life) consists of and how we ought to get there. "Love thy neighbour" or "from each other after their capacity, to each one after their needs", is attempts to put adjust injustices and say something about how we ought to live together. I could go on for a long time here making comparisons, but I will leave it at this.
My point is simply this: If pre-scientific ideas is the root of ideologies, politics and religions alike - why should religion be excluded from a conversation regarding he we can reach the good life? I'm asking myself: is science (the science Dawkins intends when he talks about science) presenting some clear cut ideas about what we ought to do with the world? What does science say about the implications of natural selection for instance? Should natural selection be allowed to run its course? One conclusion that could (I'm not saying it's the only logical conclusion that can be reached) be reached is that we should premier stronger individuals and care less about those in need, the handicapped, children, old people etc. Even from a Dawkins standpoint where science has tremendous competence and engulfs "purpose of life"-type questions, science still doesn't give us the answer to what we should do with our scientific evidence. Should we invest billions in mapping the human genome or give these billions to starving parts of the world? This isn't a scientific but a moral question.
So, if we really should kill religion, as Dawkins admittedly is setting out to do, shouldn't we (or Dawkins) present something that can replace its (contested) competence?
